Bilaspur-Manali-Leh Railway Line: India Set to Build World's Highest Railway Station
India's proposed 489-km Bilaspur-Manali-Leh Railway Line could set a world record with a 5,256-metre-high station near Tanglang La, surpassing China's Tanggula station. Explore its route, tunnels and estimated ₹1.31 lakh crore cost.
The proposed railway station near Tanglang La is the biggest attraction of this mega project. Located at an altitude of 5,256 metres, the station will surpass China's Tanggula Railway Station, which currently holds the record at 5,068 metres above sea level. The railway journey will take passengers through spectacular Himalayan peaks, snow-covered valleys and some of the world's longest tunnels, offering a unique travel experience.
The 489-kilometre railway corridor will directly connect Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh with Leh in Ladakh. The route will pass through several challenging and scenic regions of the western Himalayas. The proposed railway stations along the corridor include Sundernagar, Mandi, Manali, Sissu, Darcha, Keylong, Sarchu, Pang, Rumtse, Upshi and Kharu before reaching Leh.
These destinations are already popular among bikers and road travellers exploring the region. With the proposed railway connection, travelling through these difficult mountainous routes by train could become possible, changing the way passengers reach Ladakh.
Given the steep slopes and challenging geographical conditions of the Himalayas, a significant portion of the railway network will run through tunnels. Of the total 489-kilometre corridor, approximately 270 kilometres will pass underground through tunnels, accounting for more than 55 per cent of the entire route.
The project is estimated to cost approximately ₹1.31 lakh crore. Special air-conditioned coaches and pressurised facilities will be arranged to ensure train operations in conditions characterised by extreme cold, low oxygen levels and difficult terrain.
Once developed, the Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway corridor will represent a major infrastructure development for the Himalayan region. Its proposed highest-altitude railway station, extensive tunnel network and strategic importance are expected to make it a significant addition to India's railway infrastructure.
